2nd September - Holme 0640 - 1500 Overcast 8/10. 2-3-4 south west increasing through the day
Started birding at Redwell, this produced the expected 1 Green Sand, 3 Turtle Dove & 4 Teal. I decided to walk the Paddocks, my expectations for passerines was low and I my return was even less! 5 Whitethroat, 5 Blackcap, 2 Chiff-chaff. Fortunately this train of effort was diverted by an offshore Skua, it was just offshore on the low tide size, shape suggested Pom and as it eventually landed on the sea 3-400m from the tideline I decided to walk over.
Once on the shoreline I scoped the skua, it still looked like a Pom but I really wanted flight views, eventually it obliged big time flying towards me overmy head and then spent 2-3 minutes over the beach chasing Sandwich Terns. It was indeed a superb juvenile Pomarine Skua and I was able to absorb all of it's detail - probably the best views i have ever had of this species.
I started to walk back towards the Paddocks, and almost immediately noticed a dark wader witha dark rump flying in front of me, I was sure I knew what it was, and as it landed only 25m away I was able to confirm my suspicion a freshly pumaged - juvenile Purple Sandpiper
Whilst all this happened i was also noticing a trickle of Swallows and between 0700-0900 60 moved west, plus a single Sand Martin,
A walk in the dunes produced nothing in the bushes, but scanning the fields resulted in a total of 5 different Marsh Harriers, 4 together at one stage tangling with a Buzzard
I decided to head up to the Obs, where Connor Rand provided me with a moth tick he had a Scarce-bordered Straw that he had caught overnight in Dersingham in fact he caught 3!
I spent 1230 - 1330 & 1430 - 1530 looking on the sea towards Thornham Point, highlights were:-
9 Pintail west, my first of the autumn, 3 Arctic Skua, 34 Common Tern west, 1 Common Scoter, 2 Little Tern, 6 Whimbrel west, & 4 Golden Plover.
Insects were thin on the ground:-
Migrant Hawker 1,
Green-veined White 1,
Common Darter 1.

All things considered everyone was hoping for more!! Very few passerine migrants today, save 2 Whinchat, and 2 vocal Yellow Wags overhead. The Whinchat were in the bushes between the Golf course and the saltings.
The highest tide of the year and for 40 years did result in a fantastic spectacle along the shoreline. The few remaining sandbanks were all covered in shorebirds from Old Hunstanton to Thornham. I estimated in total 16,000 Knot, apparently the warden had counted the whole area and 20,000 was nearer the grand total! Among these were impressive numbers of Grey Plover 200+, Bar-tailed Godwit, Sanderling, Redshank, Turnstone etc and 1 leucistic Oystercatcher.
There was a trickle of Swallow & House Martin, but nothing to stir the spirit. 2-3 Marsh Harrier were again over the Main marsh.
Others:- Gannet 200+ offshore (non-directional), 3 Arctic Skua, 50+ Sandwich tern, 10+ Common Tern, 5 Little Egret Lavenadar marsh,

Insects
The NOA moth trap yielded another Scarce-bordered Straw. Common Darter & Migrant Hawker were around in good numbers. Butteflies were Common Blue, 1 Brown Argus, Small Copper & Peacock.

12th September - Morston - Blakeney 18.00 - 19.30
Another quick jaunt to the coast after work - 1 juv Whinchat, 1 Whitethroat, & 40 Swallow east. In Blakeney freshmarsh, there were 5+ Bearded Tit, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 100+ Starling and at least 2 Marsh Harrier
14th September - Sparham Pits 18.00 - 19.30
A short cycle ride and a quick walk around these pits produced a single vociferous Cetti's Warbler (my first at this site!), 1 Barn Owl, 1 Kingfisher & 10 Wigeon
16th September - Holme 7.30 - 17.00 Overcast 10/10 light NNE
The weather looked good with a high extending over most of Scandinavia & northern europe. I managed 2 circuits today from Hunstanton Golf course up to the NOA Obs and back in a circuitous route. There was a nice a flush of commoner migrants.
First I walked the edge of the dunes and then the car park area around the Firs - at around 0800 I had a nice sequence, 8 Song Thrush, 2 Redwing (early date!), 4 Yellow Wags passed overhead, 3 Garden Warblers kept me moving along, and then a nice juv Pied Fly, followed by 2-3 Redstarts amongst this were several Whitethroat and Blackcaps
A walk back through the dunes and the paddocks and then on to the rough area adjacent to the golf course produced a nice scattering of
Wheatear (12+) & Whinchat (8+). By late morning I had a nice selction of birds but nothing really juicy - this was unfortunately tobe anothers prize!!
Trevor had apparently found a Yellow-browed in the dunes some 40 minutes ago, I joined a group of 3-4 others trying to pin it down.
I have seen 2 Yellow-broweds in the dunes and I knew the sallows at the hollow were the best bet. It was a good shout!! 15 minutes later I called the bird as it flew from our backs into the sallows, a fantastic bright juvenile Yellow-browed Warbler, it showed twice briefly just two of us getting satisfactory views each time.
I decided to then continue my search for my own prize bird - unfortunately it wasn't to be today. I added 3 Hobby, a juv Little Stint, 1 Spooted Redshank, a Greenshank, a Spotted Flycatcher in the paddocks (sadly a sought after bird at Holme these days!).
The day finished on high as 12 Brent Geese arrived in off the sea at around 1630.
Others:- 7 Grey Heron west, 3000+ Knot feeding on the beach, 100+ Turnstone, 1 Willow warbler, 6 Chiff-chaff, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Arctic Skua, 20 Common Scoter west and a single Eider offshore
Insects:- Small Copper 10+, Red Admiral 5+, Small White, Common Darter 20+, Migrant Hawker 100+, Painted Lady 1

0730 Paddocks - Paddocks - shoreline - Gore Point
A quick sortie after work. An immature Redstart was a nice start in the Paddocks area, but there was little else save 1 Blackcap and 2 Jays.
I headed out on to the shoreline via the golfcourse and walked towards Gore Pt. An interesting and interesting sight, was 4 very high Bonxies heading in a steady westerly direction, they were over the land and I scoped them as they passed over Old Hunstanton, and disappeared from view.
The sea was to then provide an unexpected and nice surprise as I scoped the bay - 2 summer plumage Black-throated Divers were about 200m offshore, these are scarce birds at Holme, especially in September. There was 2 Red-throated Divers also just offshore.
As I wandered on to Gore Pt, my attention was drawn to agroup of Terns and 2 Skuas, all just feeding offshore. There was clearly a shoal of fish as there was 20 Common and 20 Sandwich terns constantly circling and diving - this was also proving an easy target for two Arctic Skuas, whom were feeding off the terns at will.
Sadly I picked up 2 freshly dead Guillemots these will have been sent of for analysis.
Others:- On shoreline there was 30+ Grey Plover, 100 Sanderling, 17 Black-tailed Godwit, 60+ Curlew & 19 Brent Goose. Also 2 Whimbrel west, 20 Swallows west, 1 Kingfisher on Lavendar marsh, 1 Barn Owl over the Main marsh at dusk.
30th September - Holme 0830 - 1700 Sunny light s, warm 20. Cloud am 0/10 cloud PM 5/10
0830 - 1100 Paddocks - Gore Point
In and around the Paddocks:- 1 Chiff-Chaff, 13 Blackcap, 2 Goldcrest, 1 Song Trush, Swallow 20 west, 70 over freshmarsh PM, 1 Swift west, then a 2nd PM,
10 House Martin west, 30 Meadow Pipit west, 1 Siskin west, 1 Grey Wag west &1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 37 Starling,
42 Egyptian Goose Redwell. 7 Little Egret on Lavendar marsh.
1400 - 1630 Thornham Channel
170 Curlew, 90 Wigeon, 19 Brents, 180 Herring Gull, 500 Golden Plover. The best action of the day was when a Peregrine carrying a Redshank, was mobbed and it's prey was stolen by a female Marsh Harrier, only for the Marsh harrier to be hassled and share its meal with 3 Crows.
21 Pink-feet passed over at around 1530 heading east.
Back on the broadwater and NWT pools I scored with a singing Cetti's Warbler, 1 Spotted Redshank, 1 Water Rail & 5 Little Grebe
A brief look on the sea produced 1 Great Crested Grebe, 10+ Red-throateed Diver & 50 Gannet offshore
Here endeth a rather quiet & disappointing September!!!!!!!!
